Types of Hair Loss

Folks usually shed around a hundred strands of hair a day. In the normal human hair growth cycle, strands of hair fall out daily, and grow back in about 12 weeks.

Some individuals lose many more than the regular number of strands each day. There is a growing number of people who experience the pain of hair loss.

Experts agree that most individuals who are losing their hair haven’t even noticed it . Most folks are not concerned about their hair falling out and don’t catch an issue until people begin making comments about it.

Common Types of Hair Loss

First, lets go through the specific types of hair loss that are possible for people to have.

There is “androgenetic alopecia” which is most commonly known as pattern baldness. Men and women who are prone to “androgenetic alopecia” experience slowed hair growth and weaker hair compared to before they develop the issue. This brand of hair loss is hereditary, and caused by genes passed down in families.

The next type of permanent hair loss is called “cicatricial alopecia” which is caused by inflammation. Inflammation damages the sufferer’s hair follicles and becomes scar tissue. Due to the scars, hair is prevented from growing. Scarring alopecia can be caused by several medical conditions such as lupus erythematosis and lichen planus but experts haven’t yet determined out the exact cause of the inflammation.

Third, there is another type of hair loss called “alopecia areata”. This variety of hair loss is a disease of the immune system. Although this is the scientific name of this affliction, the cause of this disorder hasn’t been uncovered yet. Scientists say that people who suffer from this issue are usually healthy. Some researchers speculate that alopecia areata could be caused by disorders like genetic issues, thyroid disease or viruses.

There is another type of hair loss caused by a change in the normal hair cycle.  This type of hair loss is called “telogen effluvium”. This condition might happen when something shock’s an individual’s system into prematurely stopping hair growth. This type of shock can occur because of stressful emotional problems like divorce or death.  Hair loss can also happen because of physical shock. Issues like fever, weight gain/loss and nutritional deficiencies can also be a cause.

Last, the final type of hair loss called “traction alopecia”. “Traction alopecia” is caused by too much hair styling.  This puts too much pressure on the person’s scalp. The pulling from overstyling causes the hair’s roots to become weak and stops them from growing healthy hair.
